Asheville would offer more of a hiking experience. I personally prefer Charleston to Asheville, but it depends on what you want .

I don't know how guests access the Hyatt property there at the corner when the police are limiting traffic routes.

If you want a real understanding of Charleston's history, I would visit one of the Plantations: Middleburg Place, Magnolia or Drayton Hall. Each site is very different.

The carrier has a Diner (the Fighting Lady) if you get hungry. Many military displays are placed throughout the complex. Fort Moultrie is definitely worth a visit.
