You can sit on it and rock it back and forth a bit but it should drain from the kickstand. If you did all this, it should take 4 qts. My change interval for the synthetics is 5,000 miles. Like SilverF, I use Mobil1 10w30 car oil, and the slightly larger car oil filter (Purolater). Changing Honda VTX 1800 Final Drive Oil. Step 1. Remove the fill plug and the O-ring from the final drive assembly. Inspect the O-ring for wear and replace it if necessary. Step 2. Remove the drain plug and the crush washer from the final drive assembly. Step 3.

Replace the drain plugs, making sure they have their respective crush washers. Torque both drain bolts to 22 foot-pounds. Step 7. Pour in 3.5 quarts of HP4 synthetic 10W40 engine oil. The VTX1800 takes 4 quarts of oil, so check the oil after you pour in the first 3.5 quarts to see if the engine will take the last half quart. Step 8.
