The compensator adds weight to the barrel which reduces the initial slide velocity before the barrel unlocks. The downward pressure of the gasses expanding upward also puts additional wear/friction on the bottom of the barrel as the slide opening rubs underneath it. All of this reduces the rearward force getting passed to the slide.
