As long as the fuel system is funtioning correctly, you can vary that by several degrees and you'll know by the rpm's at idle in gear when you have it right.
You run the software in the test mode and select the timing function. When you go into this mode, the software locks the timing. It will then tell you where it thinks the timing should be. Hi. I have a 1985 Johnson 100 hp commercial outboard. The model number is J100WMLCOC. I cannot find the wot timing spec anywhere. I have looked many times on the net and here with no luck. What I am seeing is cranking at wot with the timer base rubber stop hitting it's stop is 21 degrees. Of course at wot this should equate to 25 degrees.
It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees. Follow the yellow/red wire coming from the powerpack until reaching a bayonet connection and disconnect it there. That's the way my 130 is wired.

The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage.
