The only real difference is that is does not have Isla Mujeres directly in front of it. Report inappropriate content.
While I haven't stayed at EPM, I have stayed at Excellence Riviera Maya 6 times and booked for two more visits this year. My choice would be EPM over any of the Secrets. I enjoyed the Secrets resorts, but like Excellence better all round. I did stay Preferred Club at Secrets and Excellence Club at ERC. The report posted on the Cancun forum of TripAdvisor few days ago said minimal seaweed at Playa Mujeres which seems to be doing way better than Playa del Carmen or Tulum in terms of algae.. Have only stayed at Atelier, but have stayed at other Secrets in the area. If food quality is important to you, definitely Atelier! I think Playa Mujeres is one of Secrets less well reviewed properties, unless it has improved. Report inappropriate content. bridgenut.

We went to Excellence Riviera Cancun in 2016 and one thing we didn't like about it was the beach. Thinking that the Playa Mujeres beach looks more appealing. If you didn't want to go to Playa del Carmen or Cancun from Secrets Akumal, you could go into the little town, about a 10 min. walk down the beach.
