Your best bet to make your fusion cores last longer is to get the max rank of the Power User perk (an Intelligence perk which unlocks at level 50 and has 3 levels). A couple of legendary perks help as well, namely the ones that recharge fusion cores from being hit with energy weapons and the one that decreases power consumption while sprinting.
