Ford edge trunk wont open.
It may not be sending a strong enough signal to the car. As for the trunk not opening I wonder if it needs the fob to be in close proximity but it is not detecting it due to a weak signal. Again, just a guess. It also seems like a sensor may have failed. This seems more likely.

If the tailgate doesn't open using the button on the boot lid, try the keyfob or button next to the lighting switch (by your right knee when driving!). All the button and open/close inputs to the tailgate ECU are handled in different ways, so whilst one doesn't work, the other should (until you get it fixed).

A blown fuse could cause this problem. Most likely this is a faulty latch in the liftgate. Since the ajar light is on this tells me the latch is the problem. Once you have the gate open you can test for power when pressing the open button. If you have power and ground then this will verify that the latch is the problem.
