It's the Browning serial numbering system. 1958 = 8G. 1959 = 9G. 1960 = 0G. Then in 1961 thru 1967 it is 1G thru 7G. 1968 = 68G. Shotguns made 1976 and up were Japanese production. You have a 1958 gun. Most barrels will interchange with any receiver.

The second issue is discoloration and uneven color. Some re-blue finishes have a slight to heavy red or purple hue. Some have slight deviations in richness in the color. Another aspect is a lack of normal wear. A 50 -70 old gun with minimal use will show honest wear. Re-blued guns cover all signs of wear.

Starting in 1968 the numbers went to 2 digits (68V) because they had used 8v already for the first year of production in 1958.
